Pyrethrum is derived from the dried flowers of Chrysanthemum Cinerariaefolium. "Pyrethrins" are the active insecticidal components of dried Chrysanthemum flowers and are used world-wide as an ecologically safe way to control unwanted pests.
The Pyrethrum flower is nature's answer to controlling insect predators because oils from the seeds of the flower provide a highly effective protection against mosquitos- carriers of deadly diseases such as Malaria, Yellow Fever and West Nile virus. When mosquitos come into contact with this natural insecticide, it attacks their nervous systems almost immediately, knocking them from the air and kiling them.
Pyrethrum rapidly affects a wide range of biting insects, but it has a low mammalian toxicity, meaning it won't harm you or your pets. The chemical has a long record of proven safety towards humans and warm blooded animals Pyrethrum is one of the least toxic of domestic insecticides available today, so it's rapidly metabolized if accidentally swallowed.
Another benefit of Pyrethrum is that insects won't quickly become immune to it. It's complex molecular structure ensures that insect resistance isn't likely to develop- what else would you expect from nature?
Pyrethrum has a broad spectrum of activity because it consists of a group of related compounds, which give it a wider spectrum of activity against more insect species than many other single insecticides. It targets many insects found in your house or garden: mosquitos, flies, cockroaches, aphids and ants, to name a few.
Pyrethrum is environmentally friendly and non-resistant so it will be degraded by the combination of sunlight and air. This makes it less toxic than most of the other classes of persistent insecticides.
Pyrethrum will flush out the insects where they hide, in their favorite spots like under the bushes and in trees. When forced out of hiding, they quickly succumb to the chemical.
Pyrethrum is a powerful insect repellent, and when combined with its low mammalian toxicity, it has become the insecticide of choice in many commercial and residential applications, such as food and grain storage protection, livestock protection, and personal protection against biting insects.
